Season 2009/10 - the build up......

Afternoon Chawton Athleticers,

As previously announced by text to you all, I have personally paid for Chawton Athletic to re-join the Farnham and District Sunday league for the 2009/10 season, so I am hopeful that you are all willing to commit yourselves to the cause to give us a team to play enjoyable Sunday morning football for.

To keep costs down, I am posting the newsletter here that I had originally planned to physically post to you. see below.

Chawton Athletic F.C.
Newsletter - June 2009

Welcome to the first Chawton Athletic .F C. Newsletter, a review of the 2008/2009 season and a preview of the 2009/2010 season.

Firstly I would like to thank each and every player who turned out for Chawton Athletic F.C. last year, some were available more often than others, but everyone made a valuable contribution to the team.

Obviously the club was set up at fairly short notice and the original driving force behind the club coming into existence was Seth, we appreciate his efforts in enabling us to play football week in week out; it was a shame when he became no longer available to play or to run the club fairly early on in the season. The lack of a home pitch never helped our cause but hopefully this should be rectified by the beginning of next season.

Last season was a tough but enjoyable one, as they say; the league table does not lie, but I feel we showed enough promise; certainly in the fixtures against the lesser sides; to encourage us for the coming season.

The final league table was as follows:

Team P W D L F A GD PTS
Bluebell 14 12 2 0 79 20 59 38
Royal Oak 14 11 1 1 86 19 67 34

Next Season. 2009/10

I am very hopeful that we will be able to field a full team with substitutes for every fixture that we are scheduled to play, but ultimately that is up to you the players.

I understand that not everyone might be available for every fixture, but please endeavour to make yourself available as often as possible, losing not fun, competing more enjoyable, winning much more enjoyable. The only way we will give a decent account ourselves next season will be to stick together as a squad of more than 14.

Shaun Newens has expressed an interest in assisting in the running of the team and we will be discussing his role over the coming months.

Thanks to George for his efforts, he has managed to secure a home pitch for the coming season. Chawton Athletic will be based at Binstead’s ground for the 2009/10 season, great work George well done mate.

Training

Quite a few of us are at the wrong end of our footballing careers and so the idea of us arranging training over the Summer would be to build a sense of togetherness for the squad and team spirit; work on some light fitness drills; hammer out some set plays both attacking and defensive and to generally create and maintain a comfortable feel for the ball. I understand that not everyone will make training every week, but the more people we have keep their interest the more likely we are to be able to mount a bid to lift ourselves from the foot of the table.

I do not envisage the requirement for us to train once the season has started; playing once a week is generally enough; so the groundwork for the coming season must be laid before the opening league fixture!

Many thanks to George Petrie and Si Edwards for volunteering to fill the Club’s other official positions these being Secretary and Treasurer respectively.

Subs will be collected before each game, please ensure that you bring your £5 along each week. The club needs funds to survive as it is only away league games that we do not have an expense to pay out for the pitch and referee (as much as £70 to £80 each time!) and please pay any fines for Bookings etc promptly as these escalate rapidly in to £28 and then £48!

Here’s to an enjoyable and successful 2009/10 season!
